Learn to see and correct the myofascial patterns of the body. By building on the BodyReading skills developed in ‘Anatomy Trains’ you will learn to interpret movement and postural patterns. We all want to have a 3-dimensional vision of the body and this workshop is the first step towards establishing those skills for your self.

We will teach you to reliably connect with the fascial tissues, the many ways in which you can mobilize them and, most importantly, the reasons why you would do it and when. Each of the techniques will be presented in the context of their structural and functional influences making this a unique workshop that will lead you to the deeper skills explored through the rest of the series.
New theory will be introduced based on the synthesis of Robert Schleip on how we can affect the fascia through stimulating different mechanoreceptors and we will draw from the approaches of many of the top researchers and practitioners from across the worlds of fascial manipulation and functional anatomy.

The FRSB series of workshops will give you the latest research information and put it in a useable context, making sure that we can be maximally effective in our application of fascial release. The world of myofascial anatomy is quickly expanding and we aim to keep you up to date if not ahead of the curve!concepts of ‘cylinders’ to the BodyReading and use it to look at the trunk in particular.
Objectives

  • Review of the AT lines in static posture and introduces more functional movement assessment.
  • Builds on the skills and knowledge of the first Anatomy Trains by developing Fascial Touch skills
  • Learn to utilise the power of the DASIE model
  • BodyReading areas in detail, making you ready to explore the body through the FRSB series
  • More movement analysis will be utilised to further aid the vision of the fascial layers gliding and the roles of the ‘locals’ and expresses’.
  • We will add the concepts of ‘cylinders’ to the BodyReading and use it to look at the trunk in particular
  • To give more familiarity to the use of Bend, Tilt, Shift, Rotate and how they relate to the body positioning along with developing Fascial Touch Skills.
  • To relate the BodyReading to Fascial Release principles of assisted and resisted releases, movement of planes of tissue, separation/differentiation of planes, relaxation of tension and using Schleip’s mechanoreceptor model to communicate different intents.
  • To relate global and local tensegrity – expresses vs locals – AT lines vs single muscles, and to understand the necessity of balancing locally as well as the overall posture.

This will relate to the forthcoming FRSB series of regional workshops that will follow the locals more closely.

Learning Environment:

  • Illustrated lecture
  • Open inquiry atmosphere; questions encouraged; high degree of vitality and humour
  • Participants will exchange palpation and practice BodyReading (visual assessment) on one another under supervised analysis of instructor and assistants.

Much more research will be referenced showing the roles of fascia in the body, making this an up to date and highly effective skill building workshop.

Learn about the myofascial tissue and its role in the body, see it in context and how it is interdependent with the other body systems. From there we begin to see how the body incorporates the Anatomy Train Lines to create easy and graceful movement – provided they are in some form of balance and harmony; restriction or weakness in one can have many knock effects.

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce you to the first four main lines –
Superficial Front and Back, Lateral and Spiral. For each of the lines we will teach you a range of movement assessments and learn the basics of Fascial Release Technique.

This is the first workshop to combine Anatomy Trains theory alongside structural and functional anatomy and analysis, blending together the concepts of tensegrity with elastic recoil for movement efficiency. We will address differential diagnosis to help identify for motor control or soft tissue restrictions and where they may be coming from.

This is an exciting and fun workshop delivered with clarity and with your practice in mind – you will have useful and usable skills by the end of the two days.
Objectives

  • Introduce the AT lines in static posture and introduces functional movement assessment.
  • Understand many of the roles of the fascial tissues in the body
  • Introduce Tom Myers’ unique style of BodyReading, letting you clearly see skeletal relationships using the vocabulary of Bend, Tilt, Shift, and Rotate.
  • To be able to see and understand the distal influences through the body – how does the shoulder relate to the opposite foot? – and why we need to assess the whole body if we are to make a lasting change
  • Learn to accurately palpate fascial areas through feeling different qualities of tissue
  • BodyReading areas in detail, making you ready to explore the body through the FRSB series
  • Movement analysis will be utilised to further aid the vision of the fascial layers gliding.
  • To relate global and local tensegrity – expresses versus locals – AT lines versus single muscles – and to understand the necessity of balancing locally as well as the overall posture.

Based on the recently released book of the same title, the Fascial Release for Structural Balance (FRSB) series is a short intensive course limited to specific anatomy and heavy on manual soft-tissue technique.

Each course focuses on 15 – 20 core ‘templates’ for technique, which can be applied in different ways for different patterns in your clients. We will teach you the relevant structural anatomy for the area and the common postural and movement implications around each of them. The short lectures utilize many new and previously unseen teaching resources to illustrate the information in a fun, exciting and, most importantly, understandable fashion.

The courses fully explain the intent and scope of each technique and will give you plenty of time to master it and experiment with the many possible variations. We will ensure that you can apply these very effective ideas and execute them in your treatments the following day.

Intrinsic Muscles of the Pelvis

The hip and pelvis combine to transfer the forces from two legs and into the one spine and therefore has a hugely complex role to fulfil in the body. Ida Rolf described the pelvis as ‘the joint that determines symmetry’ and it is easy to see why. Differences between the hips can affect down into the legs or up through the spine. Achieving balance here can be essential for long lasting results in any therapy. This course sheds light on the pelvis – the keystone of human architecture – by organizing the 20 or so muscles of the pelvis into three fans. Get specific with sensitivity.

Objectives

  • Seeing how the soft tissue is arranged in an easy to understand pattern – the so-called ‘fans of the hip’
  • Using these fans to balance pelvic tilts and torsions
  • Learning how work accurately, effectively and sensitively with the adductors around the ischial ramus and deep lateral rotators, leading to the pelvic floor
  • The psoas complex and the many variations on ideas of how it does (or does not) affect pelvic, low back and hip patterns

Each class includes:

  • Relevant anatomy for the area – short intensive and integrated presentations assemble the best figures from multiple sources, including brand new learning tools such as video of fascial dissections and palpation of the relevant structures to convey the information in an inspiring and understandable fashion.
  • BodyReading (visual assessment) – the common postural and movement implications – how to see and ‘read’ them in the intricacy of individual patterns
  • Fascial Release Techniques – each technique is fully laid out for intent and ‘feel’, with plenty of time for practice, ensuring that you can apply these methods immediately in your practice

Don Thompson Profile Image Update

Don Thompson – Teacher

Don Thompson has been involved in the study of the 4-dimensional human form for the best part of 3 decades.  He is intrigued by the complexity of the 3-D shape puzzle that leads to each of our individual structure and function outcomes.  Alongside this lies a passionate interest in the timeline of where we have collectively come from in evolutionary terms, of the individual personal story we each have… and of the future potential within the transformative process that can occur through the easing of restriction patterns, improved structural relationships and of reconnecting to the inner awareness of the body.

He draws upon his broad personal experiences of having formerly been a strength athlete, an adventure-sport adrenalin junky, and a successful personal trainer as much as from his personal journey through the vicissitudes of Life.  Along with an extensive education in bodywork and complementary therapies he brings humour, clarity and open-enquiry to his workshops.

Increasingly fascinated by integrating movement and manual therapy he has been an integral part in developing much of the new program now being incorporated into the Anatomy Trains school and approach. For this project Don has drawn from his cross-spectrum understanding of both form and function, a unique and insightful blend that he presents with patience and humility.

Don holds a BSc in Complementary Therapies and Bodywork for the University of Westminster.  Don and his partner live and work in the Scottish Highlands where they own a small clinic that is run on not-for-profit and community ideals.  The majority of Don’s clinical work is with people with chronic pain and discomforts that have their origins in posture, habits and work patterns, where he takes a problem-solving approach using Structural Integration, visceral/neural manipulation and movement re-education with the people he works with.

This course is an extension of “Understanding our Connective Tissue system: Its role in dysfunction after breast cancer treatment – basic (level I) course”.

This course aims to expand on the understanding of fascial anatomy, damage to the fascial system and the treatment of a wider range of problems that may arise from surgical adhesions or tissue fibrosis after injury, surgery or radiation therapy.  Shoulder and breast anatomy and treatment were covered in the first course. This course will include anatomy and treatment of the neck and masticatory system, the anatomy and treatment of the abdominal wall and the anatomy and treatment of the thigh and knee.  A further aim is to improve the palpatory and manual treatment skills of the participant and their clinical reasoning.

A LOT OF TIME WILL THEREFORE  BE ALLOCATED TO PRACTICAL WORK AND PROBLEM SOLVING.

Upon the completion of this workshop, the therapist should have an understanding of the importance of fascial anatomy and its considerations in musculoskeletal dysfunction. Secondly, in addition to the treatment of post mastectomy dysfunction covered in the first course, the participant should have an understanding of the dysfunction and treatment after head and neck cancers, the dysfunction and treatment after abdominal surgery and an understanding of the biomechanics and treatment of the knee.

 Willem Fourie – Teacher

Willem Fourie has thirty five years clinical experience in the Mining Industry and Private Practice. His interest is in musculoskeletal dysfunction after surgery or injury – notably post breast cancer treatment.

The treatment and rehabilitation of the full range of musculoskeletal problems experienced after the surgical and radiotherapeutic treatment of breast- and other cancers as well as lymphoedema.

Although all wounds pass through the same mechanism of repair towards full recovery, the final cosmetic and functional result may differ markedly. Successful healing does not automatically correlate with the return of full function.

At present, Willem’s emphasis is on finding solutions to pain and dysfunction syndromes after tissue scarring and fibrosis. The more detailed understanding of interrelationships and function led to the development of an upgraded movement model for therapy, presented in courses internationally.

Background of level of evidence on which the course is based:

This course is based on detailed dissections and study of the functional and integrated fascial anatomy of the shoulder girdle. Various manual therapy techniques, fascial, viscerofascial and myofascial release techniques were used and modified to     accommodate the new understanding of applied anatomy and the role played by connective tissue in function. The clinical approach has largely evolved from integrating work from Francine St George (Australia), Stuart Robertson (United Kingdom), Tom Myers (United States) and Luigi and Carla Stecco (Italy).

Course objectives:

This workshop is to introduce the participant to the connective tissue and fascial systems and its role in normal function.  A further aim is sharing how dysfunction and pathology may develop by interference within this system. By understanding how various systems interlink to determine function, integrated treatment strategies are introduced.  Participants will develop skills for evaluating and treating of individual patients using an integrated approach.

Elements and subjects to be covered during the course:

1.   Body design:

All structures are involved in movement quality.  Seeing the body as a pre-stressed “biotensegrity” for musculoskeletal function is described. This expands the view of linear biomechanics to explain movement into a more realistic view of the body functioning as a non-linear system where small changes can produce a disproportionately large output.

2.   Connective tissue:

It is further aimed at bringing connective tissue and fascia as a microscopic subject into the macroscopic domain. The fascial system as a living tissue constituting our “organ of form” that can be assessed, moved and manipulated. Aspects covered in the workshop:

a)  The structure and classification of connective tissue

b)  Vessels and nerves of connective tissue where its roles in fluid transfer, proprioception and sensation are highlighted

c)  Connective tissue architecture. Design differences on a macroscopic level in different parts of the body with special reference to function and movement quality

d)  Different fascial layers encountered therapeutically i.e. skin/epidermis, superficial fascia/hypodermis, deep fascial and myofascial are explained and evaluated

e)  Functions and roles of connective tissue and fascia

f)   Physiological changes due to injury, immobilization and scarring

g)  Wound healing and how tissue responds to manual therapy during all stages of healing

3.   Contributors to dysfunction:

How a “local” tissue dysfunction (loss of tissue mobility) can contribute to a “global” body response (changed movement patterns) is looked at.

4.   Manual assessment and treatment of the connective tissue:

The principles of fascial assessment and treatment are explained, demonstrated and practiced.  A grading classification of the depth of touch and palpation of tissue is introduced.

The palpation for tissue mobility, flexibility and glide are carefully demonstrated and practiced within the group. The participants learn to identify the extent, quality direction and depth of compromised tissue mobility.

5.   Complaints after Breast Cancer Treatment:

Dysfunction (lymphoedema, restricted movements and weakness) as well as pain syndromes after the treatment for primary breast cancer are fully explained.  Details of surgical and reconstructive procedures are given and demonstrated.  The detailed post breast cancer knowledge is then used to formulate an individualised assessment and treatment plan for every patient and stage of recovery.

After this workshop, participants should have a clearer understanding of:

  • The functional anatomy and biomechanics of the upper quarter.
  • The structure of connective tissue, its classification, and its role in normal musculoskeletal function.
  • How this system is damaged by trauma, surgery, overuse, or habit, and ultimately the body’s postural responses leading to later complaints – even in non-related areas of the body.
  • How to evaluate the connective tissue/fascial system.
  • How all the above guides you, the therapist, through the most appropriate personalized treatment strategy for every individual patient.

Much more research will be referenced showing the roles of fascia in the body, making this an up to date and highly effective skill-Building workshop.

Michael Watson Classroom 3

Overview
Learn to see and correct the myofascial patterns of the body. By building on the BodyReading skills developed in ‘Anatomy Trains’ you will learn to interpret movement and postural patterns. We all want to have a 3-dimensional vision of the body and this workshop is the first step towards establishing those skills for yourself.
We will teach you to reliably connect with the fascial tissues, the many ways in which you can mobilise them and, most importantly, the reasons why you would do it and when.

CPD Workshop – WAYFORWARD – Willem Fourie March 2013

Understanding our Connective Tissue System

Complaints after Breast Cancer Treatment

 Date: Friday 8th – Sunday 10th March 2013

Venue: The Meridian Centre, Birmingham UK

Times: 9am – 5pm

Teacher: Willem Fourie PT, MSc ©

Aspects covered in the workshop:

a)    The structure and classification of connective tissue.

b)    Vessels and nerves of connective tissue where its roles in fluid transfer, proprioception and sensation are highlighted.

c)     Connective tissue architecture. Design differences on a macroscopic level in different parts of the body with special reference to function and movement quality.

d)    Different fascial layers encountered therapeutically i.e. skin/epidermis, superficial fascia/hypodermis, deep fascia and myofascia are explained and evaluated.

e)    Functions and roles of connective tissue and fascia.

f)      Physiological changes due to injury, immobilization and scarring.

g)    Wound healing and how tissue responds to manual therapy during all stages of healing.

The workshop will be an intense mix of theory and practical work, and will therefore only allow a limited number of participants.
